Getting started with DMX

Install DMX on your Mac, connect the X accounts you use, and set up the two things that matter: unrestricted DMs and notifications, with a timeline you open on purpose.

macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Apple Silicon and Intel · Native SwiftUI app

Step 1

Install

DMX is a one-time purchase. Download the app, activate the license, and you are ready to add an X account.

  1. 1

    Get access and download

Open the download page. DMX is in early access, so the download is gated until your license is active. The same page links to license management.

  2. 2

    Install the app

Open the downloaded file and move DMX to your Applications folder.

  3. 3

    Launch DMX

DMX is a native macOS app, not a browser wrapper you install as an extension. Open it like any other app.

  4. 4

    Enter your license key

Paste the key from your purchase email. DMX validates it in the background and keeps working offline between checks.

Step 2

First run

The first launch walks you through a license check and an account profile. Signing in happens on X's own screen.

  1. 1

    Create your first account profile

Give the profile a name and a color. Profiles live on your Mac, so nothing is uploaded when you add one.

  2. 2

    Sign in to X

DMX shows the real x.com sign-in screen inside the app. Your password goes to X, not to DMX, and the session cookie is stored locally on your Mac.

  3. 3

    Start in DMs or notifications

Both are unrestricted. The timeline stays locked until you choose to start a session.

  4. 4

    Add other accounts

Repeat the same steps for each X account you use. Every profile keeps its own isolated cookie session.

Step 3

Main workflows

DMX keeps communication unrestricted and puts the limit on browsing. These are the screens you will use day to day.

Direct messages

Read, reply, and manage every conversation. Bookmark the ones that matter and mark conversations that still need a reply.

Notifications

Replies, mentions and follows stay open. From a notification you can open the tweet detail without unlocking the timeline.

Timeline, 5 minutes an hour

Start a session from the timeline tab. You get 5 minutes of browsing, then a 60-minute cooldown with a live countdown. A warning bar appears when you switch away after using the full session.

Bookmarks and reminders

Save conversations as favorites or reminders. The reminders window lists every conversation waiting on a reply.

Multiple accounts

Switch profiles from the account switcher. Each account keeps its own session and bookmarks, so work and personal DMs stay separate.

Compose

Write in a dedicated compose window, then get back to DMs. Sharing uses the macOS share sheet.

Local and private

Account profiles, cookies and bookmarks stay in your Mac's Application Support folder. DMX does not proxy your sessions through a server or track what you read.

FAQ

Short answers to the questions that come up right after installing.

Does DMX need my X password or API keys?+

No. DMX embeds the real x.com interface, so you sign in on X's own screen. The app never asks for your password and does not use the X API.

Why can't I keep scrolling the timeline?+

The timeline is limited to one 5-minute session per hour, by design. When the session ends, or when you leave it early, a 60-minute cooldown starts. The countdown shows when you can browse again.

What macOS version do I need?+

DMX requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. It is a universal build, so it runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Where is my data stored?+

Account profiles, session cookies and bookmarks are stored locally in your Mac's Application Support folder. There is no cloud sync, and DMX does not track what you read.

How do updates work?+

DMX uses Sparkle to check for signed updates automatically. You can also check for updates from the app menu.

Do DMs and notifications have limits?+

No. DMs and notifications are unrestricted. The time limit applies only to the timeline, which is the part designed to pull you into endless scrolling.
